Trying this all over again

For some a blog is there way of sharing their ego with the world. For me its for sharing everything. Mainly my love for travel and my fascination with the people and places I encounter. Even now that I am 42 I have not lost my curiosity or enthusiasm for travel and new people and I love writing about it.So here I am on a Sunday afternoon, it is raining, I have a hangover despite drinking low alcohol lager last night and my social life is as good as a Jimmy Saville Fan Club meeting. So, I decided to waste my time re-creating my blog. I had one last year and stopped updating it when I finished traveling. And as you all know, I have way too much to say to be silent for too long.

Today, April 20 2016, one of my all time favourite entertainers died. Victoria Wood's comedy played such a big part of my life, especially my teens that I feel genuinely sad.  Her sketches were a daily part of my life as a teen, me and my friends laughed out loud over and over at them, we quoted them, we re-enacted them in 6th form common room or over a beer in the pub. There are far too many of her sketches to post on here but I am going to post my favourite few, anyone who claims to know me well, will understand why I derive so much pleasure from these sketches. Sketch 1, Department store cafe, some great lines! Coming out was hard to do..

The BBC is awash with commemorations of the legalizing or rather he decriminalizing of gay sex and rightly so, this 50 year commemoration is coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele a bloody battle that lasted almost 4 months and was yet another pointless battle that led to the deaths of over 400,000 men and boys fooled into fighting for leaders who cared more for the land on which the fighting took place than they did about their soldiers. I watched the BBC drama ‘Man in an Orange Shirt’ the story of two public school boys who were in the army during WW2 and fell in love.   One went on to marry his high school sweetheart (in reality his best female friend) and the other went to prison and on release went to live in France. My ode to the US of A...

My relationship with the USA goes back a long way.  In 1976 Jimmy Carter came to my home town, planted a tree and we all waved the Stars & Stripes at the end of our school field as he drove by, we were excited, not sure why but we knew where America was, and what it meant to us, cowboys, yellow taxis, skyscrapers, Starsky & Hutch etc, the USA was a an icon that seemed friendly and creative. As I grew up and I studied history I learnt of Pearl Harbour, D Day, Hiroshima etc and the stories of how the USA saved us from the Nazis (the Soviet Union's role was whitewashed at the time due to the cold war).  I met my first American in 1982 on a school trip in Belgium (at the site of the Battle of Waterloo), they were tall, loud and friendly and curious about the fact we came from a place called Washington in England.  In 1996 I went to the USA for the first time, New York, and it was every thing I imagined, the thrill of seeing the skyline of Manhattan from JFK airport, ...
